Why I Love Insanity by Beachbody and Why you should too!

Part 2 of my Insane fascination with the Insanity Fitness Program.

If you are a Warrior then you need to be in shape, there is not doubt about that. One of the best workouts I have found out there has to be the Insanity program by Beachbody. I strongly believe that every Warrior must have this program if they want to continue to make serious gains in their level of physical fitness and this is why.

#1 Competition

You may not think that a video series could initiate the competitive Warrior inside you, but I know it has in me in three different ways.

  • Fit Test: At the beginning of the program and then every 2 weeks thereafter you do a fitness test consisting of several exercises. So the fitness test is definitely not as dynamic as the the workouts, but don’t worry, because if you do it right and “dig deep” for maximum effort you will benefit greatly from it. This fit test is critical to improving throughout the program as it holds you accountable and provides an added level of motivation during the workouts. If you follow the program and put in the work, then you will improve with every test you do. This will help push you to keep going.
  • Video People: Both during the Fit Test and throughout the workouts, I find myself competing against the people in the video. Even though they are ultra fit and have probably completed the entire program several times, I still find myself trying to stay at their speed or even beat them. Although this often makes me feel weak as I am not always able to keep up, or if I am I end up on the floor sucking wind. Regardless, trying to compete with Shaun T the lead fitness professional and his gang of fitness gods makes me push myself just a little bit harder. Plus I do feel better when the camera pans away and focuses on someone else, but in the background you can see one of the participants clearly hurting as much as me.
  • Personal Improvement: Every time I do an exercise I am always competing with myself. I know from one video to the next how I performed the last time I did that exercise and I always want to do better. The first couple of times I did a workout I wasn’t always able to get thru the full exercise, so my initial competition became simply making it through each sequence. Once that was achieved, or I had some exercises I excelled at then my objective was to pick up the pace and do as many reps as possible, as fast as possible.


#2 Time

Time is one of the biggest excuses people have for not getting in a workout. Well the Insanity program really reduces the amount of time it takes to get a workout in and therefore reduces the potential for excuses. From start to finish each workout is any where from  30 minutes to no more than 1 hour. This includes everything including warm up, stretching and the workout. So in under an hour I can get one of the most intense, efficient workouts imaginable. This means saving time driving to and from the gym, packing gear and all the other little “time burglars” or “excuses “associated with going for a workout.

#3 Structure

As previously mentioned this program has everything. Each video includes:

  • a Warm Up
  • Stretching
  • The Most Insane Workout Imaginable
  • Cool Down Stretch

The entire program will improve your strength, cardio, endurance, agility and flexibility. It has it all and because of that you cannot help but loose weight.

This structure allows me to ensure all aspects of my workout are covered in order to maximize results, reduce potential injury and minimize time.

Additionally, there is an added bonus regarding the structure which I just came to realize and enjoy. You do not have to think, you just have to do. Follow the video and do the best you can. I had no idea how much time I spent thinking and planning certain workouts, in order to maximize gains with the right exercises in a sufficient amount of time. Well Shaun T and the folks at Beachbody have done all the thinking for you.

#4 Variety

I am absolutely amazed at how many exercises this workout program has. Each video contains the right amount of variety to ensure progressive results and to keep me interested. The same thing applies from one video to the next, because although there are similarities, the focus of each video is a little different. And if you follow the schedule, just when you start getting comfortable a new phase kicks in. All of this helps keep the workouts fresh and increases results.

# 5 Full Body Workout

Regardless of which phase of the workout you are on or which video, every workout is a full body workout. Whether you’re doing the cardio, plyometric or interval workouts you will hit all the major muscle groups. Just about every exercise targets multiple muscle groups and many individual exercises alone would be classified as the body workouts. This is how you are able to accomplish so much in such a short time period.

#6 Improved my Running

So the Insanity workout has very little actual running it, and when you do it, it is simple on the spot or side to side. Regardless, since the exercises target such major muscle groups and core strength you will actually see a transference of progression from Insanity to other athletic activities. In the first month alone I managed to shave several minutes off my 5 km time and now I’m running distances that have in the past proved very difficult. I am now able to run over 10+ km with greater ease than ever before and with a much faster recovery rate.

#7 No Equipment Needed

I have to say this has to be one of the best aspects of the Insanity program. Other than a DVD player, TV and water bottle,  you do not need to buy anything else. This is good since my home gym is already full of large equipment, some of which I do need even need anymore. You also do not need any other things some of the other programs recommend like chin up bars, dumbbells, etc. Your body weight is all you need, and if your like me that’s plenty enough.

#8 Minimal Footprint

Because of the fact that you do not need any major equipment there is a very small space required and that is only during your workouts. All you need is enough space to move to either side a little, to do push ups and  a little height to jump. In fact there is such a minimal amount of space required I have been able to conduct my workouts in hotel rooms while on the road. I just open up my laptop, move a couple pieces on furniture and “voila” instant High Intensity gym.

#9 Cost

So because of Insanity and other beach body products I cancelled my gym membership years ago. For the price of one of those big gym memberships I could get probably about 6 different video programs a year from Beachbody or other companies. And now because Beachbody has this awesome On Demand program, I get access to so many workouts at a fraction of the price. I then stream them onto my TV with Google Chromecast and just like that I have instant access to Insanity, P90 X and so many other great workout programs.

#10 Progress

The best part of Insanity is probably how quickly and effectively you progress. Everyday you will be able to see changes in your capabilities and your appearance. If you have excess weight to loose it won’t take long for it to start coming off. You will get better at individual exercises and you will find in a very short time frame that your ability to make it through the workouts will improve. You will have such an abundance of energy, strength and stamina that you will look and feel like a different person. If you stick with the program and monitor your nutrition you will definitely see results in a very short period of time.

#11 Kicks my Ass

I’m not sure why I love a workout program that kicks my ass, so maybe I have issues. But every time I do one of the videos I am amazed at how something as simple as doing body weight exercises can have such an impact. It doesn’t matter how many times I’ve done the program , every video, every time, kicks my ass. Now don’t get me wrong, I am still progressing and am capable of so much more now. But because of the competitive nature and structure of the Insanity workout program I frequently find myself on the floor sweating like a water fountain at the end of the videos.

Conclusion (#12 Results)

The final and most compelling reason regarding why I love Insanity, by BeachBody, is because of the results. As long as I put in the time and effort the results are there. I have lost over 20 lbs but have still managed to gain strength and muscle. I am running faster and flying through departmental fitness tests. I have more energy and am able to get so much more accomplished in my day. So because of the results and all the other reasons I’ve mentioned I absolutely love the Insanity program, by BeachBody.
