Warriors face many challenges in their daily lives, but the need to improve and maintain their fitness levels is probably one of the biggest. In this manner Warriors differ greatly from everyday people because of the need for high levels of fitness, as it may effect the lives of the public, their colleagues or even themselves. Every Warrior regardless of occupation or position must ensure their level of fitness is at the highest possible standard. This however is not an easy undertaking, as today’s Warriors are plagued by many barriers to fitness. These hurdles mostly relate to time, as Warriors must workout daily, but are often worked much longer and harder than other professions. This creates an additional challenge related to efficiency, as there is a lot of information out there and many Warriors may not be aware of some of the best ways to maximize their workouts for the greatest results. However, several years back I found an excellent solution to this issue and thought I would share that with you today.

My Insanity Story

I have never been a big fan of the 80’s style, home based, video workouts that instilled images of bad headbands and wool leggings. With that said, I was a little skeptical when I was first introduced to this program. However, my concerns were quickly dismissed after the first workout. But before I get into the program  I will first share how I got exposed to this. It was about 6 years ago and I was a full time Army Military Policeman, working at a desk job in our operations cell. I had time every morning to workout and I did so religiously. However, I spent most of my workouts doing endless boring cardio and strength workouts. The results of this daily “routine” were minimal at best and basically equated to maintenance not improvement. This continued for some time and eventually the results turned negative and I began putting on weight and seeing no improvements. This to me was unacceptable as I was about to deploy on a short 3 month mission and then have to return to civilian life as my contract was coming to an end, which would mean I needed a job. As a Law Enforcement professional I hoped to transition to a similar field but no agency would take me if I was overweight and unable to complete their fitness test. And then a friend of mine (who also turns out to be a Beachbody Coach) turned me onto a High Intensity Interval Training program known as Insanity. As I mentioned before, I was never a fan of video workouts, but since I tried many other programs and was short on time I thought I would give it a try. Boy am I glad I did.

The first workout was actually a fitness test and it only took 20 minutes. About half way through I was so gassed I could barely continue, but I did. I made it through with some very mediocre results. The next day I started with my first video workout and barely made it through the warm up as the intensity level was something I had never really seen before. I again, pushed through and tried to keep up with as much of the video as I could. Day after day I forced myself into the basement, plugged in the video and pushed myself as hard as I could. Every two weeks I would also conduct the fitness test again and guess what, each time I improved. Eventually I completed the program and had some amazing results in only 2 months time. I had lost about 20lbs but gained a tremendous amount of muscle, without lifting a single weight. I could run faster than I could in my twenties and do twice as many push ups. My clothes fit better and I had an unbelievable amount of energy. I deployed on my mission and still managed to maintain the fitness level I had accomplished. When I got back, I started the program all over again and immediately saw more improvements. I continued the workouts right up until about a few days before my fitness test with a local Law Enforcement Agency and flew through their test. I was very thankful for the program and still use it today when I need an extra push in my workouts or have been dragging my ass for a while. Case in point, I just dug out the old DVD set and started back up with the program. I am already starting to see improvements again, even though I have done the program many times before. Which is I why I decided to post this article, as I believe every Warrior can benefit from the Insanity workouts even though it is not as mainstream as it once was. And if you are a former Insanity enthusiast you will be happy to know that there are several new versions of the program available.

What is Insanity?

Insanity is a home based High Intensity Interval Workout that consists of a series of videos that you follow over a 60 day period. It includes a fitness test and several different, targeted workouts focusing on cardio, strength, endurance, core stability and many others including functional fitness. It also comes with a handy nutritional guide and a poster for tracking your workouts. The best thing about the workouts, is you only use your own body weight. You will not require a single piece of equipment, except for some workout shoes  and maybe a towel to wipe up all the sweat.

The series is produced by a company called Beachbody and they are one of the largest fitness organizations around. They are the same guys that have brought you programs like P90X, Les Mills Combat, Turbo Fire and the 21 Day Fix. They also have an excellent program for anyone to become a coach and they sell great supplements like Shakeology and a Results and Recovery shake for post intense workouts (I use bot of these and they are amazing).

The DVD’s themselves are extremely professional in production and they will last you a long time. I’ve had mine for a little over 5 years and have used them several times. My wife has also used them and loves the workouts. Although at first that wasn’t the case as they were much more challenging for her. She actually used the BeachBody Hip Hop Abs program plus some other training to build up to Insanity, but now she absolutely loves the workouts. In fact she used them to get into Law Enforcement as well, but I’ll save her amazing story for another time. However, it appears I have strayed a little and the point here is the quality of the DVD’s will last for multiple uses over a long period of time.

The Workout

So I could tell you all about the exercises, or you can watch a video or two. I will say this, all the exercises use only your personal body weight. NO EQUIPMENT REQUIRED!

You will be amazed at how good a workout you get and how fast the results come, without a single piece of equipment.

Also there are a lot of people out there talking about Insanity. One thing to keep in mind, like every fitness program, is this may not be for you. Especially if you have injuries or medical conditions. So a word of warning, see your doctor before starting this.
